PC Pro Schools Graduate Success Story
Christian Guilbert is a PC Pro Schools graduate turned PC Technician. Below, he discusses his experience as a student and why he loves his new IT job.
Before attending PC Pro Schools, I was I was a Security Officer for a security services company.
I decided to make the and attend PC Pro Schools because I’ve always loved technology since I was very young, but was scared of the industry. I’ve seen so many layoffs and outsourcing, it made me hesitant. But after dreading my previous job for years and years, I finally decided to take a leap of faith.
Now, I am employed as a PC Technician at a school district in the Milwaukee area through a contracting company. Officially, my title is PC Technician. I joke that I’m also the Network Administrator, Technical Support Analyst, Deployment Engineer, Audio-Video Specialist, Technical Consultant, and Webmaster. The reason for that is because I work in a high school where I am the “Technology” department. I’m responsible for more than computer repair, but also printers, smart boards, projectors, etc. I do that while managing the software and Network Administration. Little things like “I can’t log in”, “I can’t print” to big things like, “no one in the building can access the internet!” What I enjoy most about my new career is that I actually like my job. I don’t wake up in the morning already hoping for my work day to be over.
The career services department at PC Pro Schools played a huge role in starting my career. I can honestly say I would not be where I’m at if it weren’t for career services.
Something I enjoyed most about PC Pro was my Lab Facilitator. They were not only helpful, but honest. It was refreshing.
The accelerated program was appealing to me because I’ve been in and out of community college part time for years. That being said, I didn’t have time finish my associates degree which would take another 1-2 years. I needed something better now – mainly for my sanity!
Also, since my kids are young, I needed the option to spend time with them according to their schedule, not someone else’s. I appreciated learning only specifically what I wanted to learn as opposed to wasting 6 months on a history course.
I was in a point in my life where I wasn’t at the same place for too long. I was always on the move. The online aspect really worked to my convenience. But nothing will ever replace hands-on learning during the once-a-week on-campus labs. It was better for me to make the mistakes I’ve made in a learning environment rather than at my job.
I would recommend PC Pro Schools to those who not only really want it, but are up to the challenge. I struggled to make it happen, but nonetheless, it all worked at the end.
Since graduating, I have way more time to spend with my family and don’t feel guilty for not spending five extra dollars for my kids at Chuck E. Cheese!
